Easy Shape Based Lookup

Using 12 Main Shapes, and a maximum of 16 Categories per Shape, the Easy Shape system makes it easy to find any character.

That's because the categories within a shape are all variations of that shape! And there are a maximum of 16 categories per shape.

It's Elementary (or Elemental)

Any Chinese character has a first element. (Sometimes, it's the only element!)
Using the 1st element index, you can find any character based on the shape and category of it's first element.

Sub Sorting

Some categories have a lot of characters. So that finding a character is relatively easy, characters are further sorted in Groups via their second element using the same shape based system.

For the 木 category which is under the 十 shape, characters are subsorted via their second element using the same 12 shapes. Only the first 7 are partially shown here. Neil Keleher, Easy Shape Chinese Symbols.

Whether used for sorting or sub-sorting, the 12 Easy Shapes are always listed in the same order to make finding characters easier.

There are Alternatives!

To make character lookup even easier, you can also lookup a character via its second element.

While 2nd element shapes are the same as for the 1st element, Final (Rr for short) element shapes and categories are organized slightly differently.

Final element shapes and categories are organized according to the final stroke for each shape. And that's why the shapes are slightly different!

But you can also select either 情 or 況 to see the definition of each character.

In addition, when you select a character within a word, the word list changes to show all the words associated with that character. The currently selected word remains selected, but you can choose a different word if you choose.

Word navigation offers an alternative to the Shape system, for navigating through the dictionary.
